Word of advice: if I am at the office or at home, and I am deeply involved in work-related stuff, and you need to get my attention, don't touch me. Make noise, or something. But do not get my attention by touching me or tapping my shoulder or putting your fingers repeatedly on my back.

Co-workers. That's about all you really need to know.

Fair enough.

But just because not everybody can tell from looking, what are the signs of you being deeply involved, as opposed to just "doing something but not at the don't-touch-you level"? Or is there no differentiation?

Heh. People are often spooked when I walk behind them silently, then "Boo!" them, or tap them on the shoulder, or just say "Ahem".

I hear you--I have to tell the Mad Scientists all the time that it's generally considered polite to approach my cube, announce one's self, and then enter the space.

Don't just turn up and start blathering about your problem.

Sheesh...

Oh do I EVER hear you on this.

At the Last Corporate Environment, I rearranged my entire office nook/space so that I'd have a view of the door, so that it'd be harder to sneak up on me. Even then it didn't always work. It was never intentional, of course, and eventually people did learn to make noise when they approached-- a high-pitched yelp of alarm startles EVERYONE and is a great learning tool, evidently.

Ick! I like my team but I don't want them randomly touching me whether I am aware of them or not.

We use the time honored "hey" method here.

Columbo scratched his forehead absently.

"How did you manage to get the body into the server case, mam?"

Look but don't touch...

I'm curious - have you ever actually hit anyone who touched you unexpectedly when you were deeply concentrating, as a sort of reflex? I've done that. Hard. With the side of my hand. Got the same sort of reaction as the time when a co-worker said he didn't think all my martial arts training was any good, I was a powder puff type who couldn't hit no matter what, and he invited me - INVITED me - to punch him in the belly just below his waist, and he did the 'my muscles are as hard as iron routine, and I just hauled off and - pulling it slightly so as not to really injure him - knocked all the wind out of him.
