Have read more of The Food of the Gods. While my initial response to the experimental protocols and UTTER FRIGGING LACK THEREOF remains, I am now at the point where I cannot help but mutter darkly about these man having worked for AH Robbins at some point in the past (I did a term paper on the Dalkon Shield for a grad-level course in maternal and reproductive health; the second most chilling experience I have ever had in a library was when the med school librarian shook out a Shield from its storage envelope and let me hold it). They've got about the same general attitudes and behaviours as the executives behind the Shield, down to 'Oh goodness me, by all means we should give some to our relatives' (the VP of Robbins allowed his wife to use the Shield and saw no connection at all between that and her later need for a hysterectomy in a hurry, if I recall aright). Haven't gotten much into the chapters on kids who've been fed the Food yet, though. The 'scientists' are still dealing with fame and publicity wonks. And with people fussing and fuming over giving the Food to poor people because then they might have to pay for clothing for thirty-five foot tall poor people some day.

Remember, self: cautionary tale drawn with overly broad brush, not attempt at accurate depiction of sci-fi premise. Although it is interesting to see a post-birth teratogenic substance, since after all 'terato' merely means 'monster' and not necessarily 'birth defect'.
