It's interesting. Last night and this morning, I went to take the Buckley's, and every cell in the upper part of my digestive and respiratory tracts cried out No. Every last cell was completely convinced that This Stuff Is Not To Be Swallowed, It Smells Just Like Household Cleansers, You're Not Supposed To Drink Those And You Know It.

I took it anyway. Worked last night. THis morning it didn't work so well but we'll see how it goes as the day wears on.

If this is what the Canadians use for their cold medicine, how come they haven't conquered the world yet?

There's some people who need to conquer the world just because they can. There's some people who don't need to just because they know they can.

Clearly, taking this goop has strengthened their character and taught them such wisdom and self-restraint (I don't wanna take this! It's nasty!--But it will make you well!--OK, then, I'll take it/A few moments of suffering while I swallow this crap, or a couple of weeks of misery? Easy choice!) that they fell no need to conquer the world, because they have conquered themselves instead.

Buckley's Mixture

(wipes eyes) *ahem* (still giggling) ... so, I had a google at what's *in* the 'mixture': it's basically turpentine, red pepper, and horse piss. There's a saying in Finland that if turpentine, vodka, and sauna don't kill you, you're going to survive. Looks like you'll survive.

Oh, we have.

We're just humble enough to keep it quiet.

Perhaps a useful side effect is it cures that unhealthy obsession as well? If so... perhaps we could import it in large quantities and apply as needed?

My sister drank straight turpentine at 5. You have expensive taste. They make a black liquorice in Finland (all over Scandinavia, evidently) flavoured with horse piss. They call it 'salt liquorice' - I imagine the taste of 'salmiakki' liquorice is first cousin to Buckley's. They flavour ALL cough mixtures, and most liquid medicines, in Finland with anise and menthol. I prefer garlic and honey, myself. First you drink hot whiskey and lemon juice, followed by honey in which garlic has been steeped...

My thought of why Buckley's works.

You drink it.
Your body says, "ZOMFG!!! WHY ARE YOU GIVING THIS TO ME!?!?!?! II'LL GET BETTER I PROMISE! JUST DON'T GIVE IT TO ME AGAIN!!!"
You Win.

That being said, I actually don't mind the taste of it.

OH GOD salmiakki is disgusting. Not just the candy, either, but the alcohol they make out of it, too. My ex is Finnish and he and his friends practically lived on the stuff.

I totally agree. However, this is the stuff my children ask me to bring them when I visit them in the states. The alcohol drink is actually perfectly good vodka to which salmiakki syrup has been added. Talk about adulteration...

Obviously, Canada subscribes to the Polgara Theory of Medicine.

Polgara may have invented the original recipe for Buckley's mixture.

It would not surprise me.

It would not surprise me in the least.
