As I was getting ready to leave work today, I stopped at the end of the main trading desk and looked up at the telly playing CNBC. They were showing some kind of space capsulish footage. I couldn't hear the sound just at that moment, and thought perhaps it was a commercial- but no. No, when the desk quieted down a bit, it turned out to be something about the Orion manned space vehicle. Huzzah, I thought.

Cut to footage of space shuttle launch. What, in the face of Ernesto? I thought.

Voice-over from announcer: "And so Discovery takes off, carrying our hopes for the Moon, Mars, and the future of space exploration with it." Ah, I thought.

And then, as they continued to show the liftoff process, they played the music.

This is Ground Control to Major Tom - you've really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear....

.... DUDE. NO. That's about the worst mismatch between intention and song since "Born in the USA" got played at a Republican convention.

Wow, that's worse than what Microsoft comes up with. Dear LORD do people not pay attention to LYRICS?

Well they could have gone for grand, uplifting-sounding movie music...

...like the theme from Apollo 13. ;-)

They're waiting for it to crash later so that the pilot can send his final message: "Tell my wife I love her very much,"

And they can reply, "She kno-o-ows."

And then they can do a Venture Brothers sendup.

My personal suggestion would've been Orbit's Spare Parts Express. No lyrics, very cheerful.

Well, on the 'grand insturmental theme' suggestion, why not the end credits music from MST3K? :)

Ah, but it is somehow so. Perfect? No, so classic "we really don't know this, but it has the word ground control in so..."

Whether Bowie knew it or not, that song mirrors (apparently) some of Komerov's last conversations with the ground before his fatal re-entry.

Although to his credit he was apparently cursing Soviet bureaucrats all the way to impact.

Sad, and full of germs.

I am reminded of one of the songs from _A Shoggoth on the Roof_:

Byhakee, byhakee, fly me through space
take me away
far from this place...
