Happy Dead Gangsters Day!

Remember, kids, on this day in 1929 seven antisocial guys in Chicago were rubbed out by a bunch of other antisocial guys in a spectacular display of red and, um, more red, and I guess some pink towards the end- but mostly red. Wear your colours proudly, and watch a movie with gratuitous violence, tough guys in poorly faked accents, or both in honour of the occasion!

But, Camwyn, I look to Hong Kong when I want gratuitous violence and my Cantonese isn't good enough to recognize an accent, poorly faked or no. What should I do?

Why, in this case and this case only, the good people of Hollywood- or at least of Blockbuster- have your answer for you! The movie you want for this day is a product of Hong Kong, starring everyone's favourite Clown Prince of Ass-Kickery, Jackie Chan; while it goes by several different names, you want the dubbed title, which is "Miracles". It's a Hong Kong remake of Frank Capra's "A Pocketful of Miracles", and everybody in it- everybody- is dubbed into English with accents straight out of a cheesy American gangster movie. It features one of the neatest spiral staircase fight segments I've ever seen, but more importantly, it includes a pudgy Chinese guy with a Peter Lorre accent (at least if I'm remembering right), and between the two of them, that ain't bad at all!


I'm led to understand it's currently being marketed under the name Black Dragon. God only knows why.

I know the film. It's got Anita Mui, too. But my brain would surely fry if I listened to a dub.

As I said, it's the one and only movie out of HK in which I'd rather watch the dub than the real thing. The dub is part of the comedy; it just wouldn't be the same without the Edgar G. Robinson voice coming out of Uncle Hong (or whatever).

Wheee!! *dances madly in happiness!* I've been re-reading all my Samurai Cat books just recently, and trying to pimp them and gain new converts, but not getting too far as yet.

I've been meaning to dig out mine not that my kid is old enough to appreciate them (knows enough about samurai and popular culture to get the references).

I'm pretty sure it was the wrong thing to do, but, when I started re-reading the first book there were so many pages falling out that I just pulled the whole thing apart, thinking it would be easier, that way, for eor to scan it all, for me. Probably if I set it on his desk he will eventually get around to it, and then maybe I can make some icons, too. :) (Although I'm only good at bases, I suck at doing lettering or coming up with subtitles, and animation is quite beyond me.)
