I know it is a very silly thing, and I know that for other people such things come amazingly easily, but I could not help but feel a small surge of pride when I came into the office this morning, fired up the Routing & Remote Access console on our VPN server, and saw that not one but two of the people from this office were connected remotely.

I got it to work. Yay me!

... anyway. Must get to Fordham's Manhattan bookstore today and buy my mother a buttload of thesis paper, because Mom defended her doctoral thesis successfully on Wednesday and I am now the daughter of a Ph.D.- one who has to print up two copies of her thesis on official Fordham paper, but still a Ph.D. I also have to buy a hundred dollar savings bond as a gift for my nephew, who's being christened on Sunday, and I have to go back to NJ and find a parking space for my car (I was too nervous about the space I chose yesterday to trust it and have left it in the care of an all-day parking lot instead). Tonight, though, mephron and I will be going to see Kung Fu Hustle, so that's good. It's been a while since I had a hit of the pure unadulterated sparkly pink fruit flavoured monkey crack that is Stephen Chiau.

Saturday would be slated for a 'wake me up on Judgment Day' class of sleep, but the building's monthly visit from the exterminator is Saturday, so it's more 'wake me up on the Day of the Book of Joel'. The day's largely free otherwise. I expect I'll finally get to plant my basil seeds and then do much laundry, possibly get out and go skating or something like that. Might not be a bad idea to bring my skates into Manhattan on Saturday and practice the Central Park loop before the Empire Skate Club runs start...

And, I LOVED 'Kung Fu Hustle'!!! In Jinan, would you believe, they have it playing on HUGE screens in the underground shopping areas under the street crossings and under the main square of the city, and people stop in little knots to watch the best scenes and move on when they get to the 'plot forward' bits, rather like everyone in Italian move houses whispering to each other and then going 'zitta, zitta' when the music gets to the arias...

We hope to see Kung Fu Hustle next weekend--I have used your squees over Shaolin Soccer to motivate and convince some friends who have been bemused by the trailers on TV that we need to drag ourselves out to the cinema and be dazzled. And also, probably, given the director, bewildered every now and then.

I've seen two of Chiau's movies, Shaolin Soccer and God of Cookery, but I have several others on VCD. Shaolin Soccer is very much the sparklypinkfruitflavouredmonkeycrack. Chiau is... well, the easiest way I have found to explain him to Americans is 'take Jim Carrey and feed him amphetamines, then stick his brain in a Chinese body, then realize that still isn't going to cover it'. He makes me happy, although now and again I have to flinch away from the screen because some of his jokes are on the crude side. Overall, though, I like him a great deal.

I'll probably get lynched around here, but I'm not a big fan of Steven Chow or Chiau or however his name is romanised. I'm not a fan of crackmonkeydom. I get to watch Sin City today, though, so yay.

Wrong Joel, although it makes for an amusing mental image. The Biblical prophet Joel uses massive bug-related imagery to represent an invading, overwhelming army when he gets all apocalyptic in his assessment of the times to come.

Ah, OK. I'm not up on my Bibilical prophets.

No worries. The only reason I even remember Joel at all is the bug thing. U. S. Catholic (a magazine the parish my mom used to work for subscribed to) ran an article years and years ago on the minor prophets, 'cos they do one every issue on various biblical bits, and about all I remember for sure in that article was a drawing of a wild-eyed bearded guy in vaguely Biblical clothing PLUS the bug-poisoning gear and cap of the Orkin man. That was the illustration for Joel (the article was a lot more scholarly than that).
