Well, I did my taxes yesterday. I haven't submitted them yet, 'cos of filing fees and stuff, but I'm gonna e-file the federal and probably snail mail the other two- I worked in two different states last year...

... um. We just had what was either a window-cleaning robot or one of those raise-lower platforms with cleaning guys on it go past our windows. It is very weird to be on the 29th floor and realise that your window is slowly going black from the bottom up. For half a second I expected it to be something dangerous. Not sure what. Gojira maybe.

Anyway. Uncle Sam wants me to pay for a latte and a scone at Starbucks. Uncle Dick, on the other hand, wants $316 because I worked in NY from October on but lived in NJ, and no NJ taxes were withheld on that income. And Uncle George says he owes me $84. @whee.

(Governor Codey and Governor Pataki, respectively.)

In other news, I should know better than to drink Thai iced tea at 9:45-10:00 PM just because I consider it a celebratory beverage and have just finished my taxes. I don't think I got to sleep until 2:45 last night.

You know you can deduct New York state taxes paid from your New Jersey taxes, right? Since NY taxes are almost always higher, New Jersey residents working in New York usually don't end up having to pay any Jersey taxes. (Indeed, I've gotten money back from the homestead rebate every year I've lived here.)

I just can't shake this nagging feeling that my need of my own money is greater than the government's, you know? Call me a subversive if you like, but I am filled with righteous indignation when I see congresspersons with taxpayer-subsidized haircuts banging on about how they're going to Help Their Constituents, when what'd really help their constituents is not to have to pay so much damn tax.

If I'd thought Gojira was going to show and he didn't, I'd be kind of disappointed.

This is true. I worked in NYC for part of the year and in NJ for part of the year, and you should do the New York taxes first, and then NJ gives you a credit for the taxes paid in New York.

I'd call you a subversive but I agree with you too much.

Therefore I will dub you 'sensible'.

I can live with that.

We owed the federal government slightly over $1,000. (I held four different jobs in the past tax-year, and I think at least one of them was getting my witholdings wrong.) It was a pain.
