I had a similar experience with Verizon DSL, and a similar solution - for a Megalithic Monster Company Fronted by Darth Vader, they're not as bad as all that. I do miss the service I had from Panix - they were waycool, and always pleasant to deal with - but alas they couldn't do DSL out Brooklyn-way, having been muscled out of the market by (guess who...) and dial-up was just sucking with teeth.
I am (entirely too) often given to fits of rage when dealing with companies like Verizon, credit card outfits, and so on, but I'm really trying not to do that any more since it A) doesn't help me get anything done B) doesn't harm the behemoth that enrages me but mainly C)only contributes to giving some poor low-wage schlep on a phone bank a lousy life.
Congrats on the breakthrough! Dial up may be slow, but you can always use the time to put the kettle on.
