*snorts* The red-hair green-eye thing has been around a lot longer, though not necessarily Japanese. And I must say, the image wouldn't make me think Japanese if the comment didn't claim it was. :P But jeez.

While cute, I wouldn't call that girl Japanese. She does NOT have the proper nose/eyesock ratio for it, or really look anything beyond european with maybe a japanese great-great grandmother.

Erm... I must blushingly confess that one of the stories I've been working on, off and on, for quite some time now, has a Chinese-American girl of approximately schoolgirl age who's more or less in denial about the fact that she likes girls. Didn't even occur to me that I was playing into the cliche until someone mentioned it. I bow my head with shame. On the plus side, though, she's actually got a plausible appearance, unlike this girl, who I would have pegged as 'Western European, possibly Irish' just by looking at her. I mean, facial structure, skin tone, and of course the obvious hair and eye colors -- there is nothing about that 'Naomi' that says Asian at all.

Well, on the one hand, I've seen a lot of Japanese exchange students with their hair dyed a deep shade of auburn. Usually, whenever I see a Japanese girl with their hair that color, I can tell they're part of the campus exchange program. I guess it's a fashion thing.

The green-eye thing, however, IS kinda stupid.

I would say that if she's a plausible, 3d character -- and not a random chick with bizarrely colored hair and eyes and unlikely bone structure -- then it's hardly playing into the cliché. Because part of the cliché is the random implausibility, yeah? Quite different from closeted-young-woman-who-is-Chinese-American.
