camwynWell, the shelter thing went pretty well today. We weren't allowed to shut down in a few hours, so Gary and I (Gary being another volunteer who was sent with me to open the shelter) stayed there for the day anyway. Which is just as well, because at 6:15 (we were under orders to leave at 7) a kid playing basketball nearby ripped his thumb something awful on the rim and came to us bleeding like a stuck pig. Gary clapped a rag over the kid's thumb and held the pressure point (he was pumping pretty badly) while I got the first aid kit, and when the kid started to turn greyish and woozy the sheriff's deputy who we had on scene all day called 911. The kid wound up not going to the hospital, but the EMTs complimented us on doing a good job with him.
Tomorrow is sort of kind of a day off. I'm on standby to open the shelter, but they'll give me two hours' warning, since it's an hour's drive to the shelter location and I gotta pack...
THE MINIVAN!
They gave me a minivan. No ERV. Derrick and I were split up the other day and we're gonna stay split up so far as I know, since they asked me to hand in the ERV keys and I think he's flying back to NJ tomorrow. Two thousand miles and seven days with the same person is pretty much enough, in my book, at least when it's not someone I consider a personal friend. He, and a lot of others, are flying home because of Ivan. Me, and a lot of others, are staying here at various hotels deemed officially Safe and Far Enough From The Water. Other folks are going to Orlando and waiting there as a staging area, but I'm gonna serve out my hitch if it's in my power to do so.
They gave me a minivan. I can go where I want. Captain Jack Sparrow was right- it's not just a vehicle, it's freedom.

derien, I'm gonna call your mom-in-law tomorrow about dinner, unless they need me on night shift at the shelter. I doubt they will, though.
