Back at work. Dealing with database crap. Working on getting semi-decent computers for accounting office so we can upgrade the hell out of our old Win95-based software (everyone else here at least 98SE, thank you very much).
Listening to the soundtrack from Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade. This is serious 'make your characters hurt' music, thanks to the anime it came from. Which is good, 'cos I'm working on the next part of Hellblazer: Hogwarts and have got a bit tired of the soundtrack I made for John. It'll be restored when we get to classes, which should be soon. The rest of ch. 5 of Who Ya Gonna Owl will be done after H:H, and posted to FictionAlley together with the Julian Konopka stuff.
Got MD appointment tonight so I can reactivate my DSHR membership and possibly get sent to TornadoLand or HurricaneWorld. Not to the island of Hispaniola, though. A, international assignments are six months, and b, I don't have a passport yet.
Getting back into the swing of things with Dave Grishin.
Finished knitting first slipper for felting. Now to see if enough yarn remains for #2.
Don't want to talk to people at lunch. It's all co-workers and while they're decent folk, I don't wanna talk to the mundanes today. And I really don't want to spend lunch in the same room as Person Who Talks Loudly And At A High Pitch All The Time Because Of Cultural Conditioning. Maybe I can sneak outside or something.
Must rent Jeremiah Johnson when I get home, or set VCR to tape it if we get that channel. My plans for Scary Ninja Mountie's young adulthood include several years spent living in Wyoming wilderness because he feels survival is an Important Thing To Learn, and while pulp does not necessarily equal cinematic, it's as close as I'm gonna get.
Bonnie Brae Highland Games this weekend. Think I will go watch. Would like to see if Clan Wallace still running big Black fellow who won the sheep toss a few years back. (It's not an actual sheep, which made me sad. It's a forty-pound weight with a handle.) Must find little weird fellow with copy of The Book of Ulster Names, which is only reference I have ever found with my family's last name in that does not merely say 'variation on O'Gadhra' or some other such assimilationist nonsense. Besides, there are usually border collie demonstrations.
Just remembered something I realised while watching The Shadow at Grandma's: Shiwan Khan not so special as he thought. Genghis Khan has been genetically proven to have millions of descendants scattered across central Asia. Can only assume Shiwan was last living straight-line descendant, in the first-son to first-son way, or something. That, or he had a delusional family and genetics for mystic mental foo and never found out about all his umptygazillion relatives. Pimp Daddy Genghis!
Has been 3 wks. since my cousin mailed Alshani to Weird Tales for me. WT responded in a month last time. Hoping hoping hoping. Should WT reject it I'm goin' to Fantasy & SF with it, dammit.
Someone asked last night if there was no such thing as a fandom free from Mary Sues. I would say I'm very proud that I've got two- Sergeant Preston and the Silver Corporal- except for two things. One, no one's written Silver Corporal fanfic at all yet (though I'm planning to), and two, am rather afraid that Louise may be perceived as a Sue despite my efforts to make her bearable, flawed, human, interesting, etc. So all I said was 'only the really, really tiny fandoms' and left it at that.
Meh. Time to go deal with lunch now. Please Lord don't make me have to be sociable today.

Date: 2004-06-01 10:03 am (UTC)I just love the dialouge in the movie.
"That's a lovely tie by the way, Where did you get it?"
"Brooks Brothers. Third and Madison."
"Is that West?"
"Midtown. You, are a Barbarian."
Not exact, I know, but close enough.

Date: 2004-06-01 12:00 pm (UTC)The dialogue was great, though. I bought the videotape in Florida. $2.98 for the banter and for seeing Gandalf go 'oh, well, what the hell, it's usually green'? Money well spent.

Oh yeah, I love the dialouge.

"I . . crap."

Date: 2004-06-02 09:20 am (UTC)I'd just as soon not post it in my LJ, actually. Silly of me, but it's one of my pet oddities. I'll pass it to you when I get home.

The arch-enemy of the pulp-era and old-time radio character The Shadow. I believe he was referred to as a 'Tibetan superfiend'. According to the 1994 movie, The Shadow, he was billing himself as the last living descendant of Genghis Khan.
