All is relatively well. Grandma lost her wallet in the taxi on the way home from the airport but she got the cards in it mailed back; she's out $160 but she's all right with that.

Went to beach yesterday. Could not snorkel as too much sand in water. Waves v. rough. Swam anyway, though I took off fins as they made it hard to stand up. After getting knocked arse over teakettle and having ENTIRE ATLANTIC OCEAN try to cram itself up left nostril I got out of water for good. Found out upon arrival home that there is currently a DEADLY KILLER RIPTIDE going on off that coast, and I am not kidding. Five dead in past two days. Apparently ocean's last whack was its way of saying 'I like you, but you'd better get out before I do summat you won't like'.

Taking Grandma on glass-bottom boat ride today. Assuming of course that DEADLY KILLER RIPTIDE does not attempt to eat boat, there will be snorkeling - for me at least, Grandma not interested.

Have been writing up background for Scary Ninja Mountie, aka The Silver Corporal, one of Lester Dent's creations. You may remember Mr. Dent as the author of Doc Savage, the Man of Bronze. There are all of two Silver Corporal stories in existence, so I figure I can probably do quite a bit fanficwise with the fellow as long as it's plausible.

Have written several more paragraphs of Ira, aka "Rocketboy", but will type them up when I get home.

Am also working up scene involving John, Mad-Eye Moody, and inn-shattering kaboom. And on stuff w/Ghostbusters at the Ministry of Magic, don't worry.

More later as events warrant.

Had an uncle who was a beach lifeguard at Rockaway Beach, NY- the stretch where the immigrants from China who were smuggled here on the Golden Venture came ashore. He works for Motorola now, but the things he could tell you about bringing in 'floaters' would make your hair turn white.

Yeah... but my God, there is NO NEWS in this town. Five news programmes yesterday evening and EVERY SINGLE ONE gave the same bloody reports about the riptides. Half of 'em interviewed the same people who could not tell you what a riptide was, or how to get out of one.

Newspaper this morning said nine people had to be pulled out of the ocean by lifeguards yesterday.

I'll be staying in the nice little swim tank, thanks.

If you ever get the chance to lay your hands on a volume of compiled stories called The Scarlet Riders, both of the Silver Corporal's stories are published in there (along with a third Lester Dent story which is a bit more lurid than I like). It's all pulp-era Mountie stories and it varies a lot in terms of quality, but based on what I read in those two stories I think I can fairly safely term this guy a Scary Ninja Mountie. Lord, I wish I could remember which of my LJ entries was about him- you'd see what I mean... all I know is, someone so small that the author repeatedly referred to him as 'wee' and 'elfin', but who was said to have defeated a whole tribe of Indians with his bare hands- and of whom it was said that the Eskimos feared him more than Hell, and called him a spirit from the other world- and who never carried a gun but who had a rope of some unidentified white material that was deadlier than Indiana Jones' bullwhip and a bandolier full of shurikens put together? Plus he had Batman's ability to disappear from sight in the space of an eyeblink? Scary Ninja Mountie.
