Since I am working on the second half of the latest H:H installment, I will at least play Name That Tune with lyrics from the John soundtrack I put together so that there's something available until I'm done. I'll let folks know what the actual songs are once you've had a chance at guessing and such. Use of search engines to find the songs involved is cheating.

1. The world's gone crazy, it makes no sense. There's only one voice that comes to your defense. The jury's out - your eyes search the room and one friendly face is all you need to see.
2. See for yourself - you have been sitting on a time bomb.
3. No one's going to save you from the beast about to strike.
4. The head nurse spoke up- she said, "Leave this one alone."
5. I'm the innocent bystander, but somehow I got stuck between a rock and a hard place and I'm down on my luck.
6. I took the money, I spiked your drink. You miss too much these days if you stop to think.
7. Things ain't been the same since the blues walked into town. But I'm a one in a million, 'cos I've got that shotgun shine. Shame about it - born under a bad sign with a blue moon in my eyes.
8. Yes, I was there too, and you know what they said? Well, some of it was true!
9. Do it in the name of Heaven- you'll be justified in the end. There won't be any trumpets blowing come the Judgment Day, but on the bloody morning after...
10. Look into the mirror of your soul. Love and hate are one in all. Sacrifice turns to revenge and believe me, you'll see the face.
11. All my scars are on the inside - I'm not sure there's anything left of me.
12. Young punk spillin' beer on my shoes, fat guy's talkin' to me tryin' to steal my blues. Thick smoke, see her smilin' through- I never thought so much could happen just shootin' pool.
13. And I'd join the movement if there was one I could believe in. Yeah, I'd break bread and wine if there was a church I could receive in, 'cos I need it now.
14. Mephistopheles is not your name; I know what you're up to just the same.
15. Neon lights, Nobel prize - when the mirror speaks, the reflection lies.
16. Turned away from it all like a blind man; sat on a fence but it don't work. Keep coming up with love but it's so slashed and torn...
17. They sold me a dream of Christmas; they sold me a silent night. They told me a fairy story 'til I believed in the Israelite.

One each, right?

#9 is "One Tin Soldier", by Coven - though I think this lyric is wrong; I always heard it as "you can justify it in the end".

8 -- London Calling, by the Clash (though I'm mostly familliar with the Captain Tractor cover.)

#14 is the Police, "Wrapped Around Your Finger".

And that reading of "Until the End of the World" had never occurred to me either, but now that I go read the lyrics... (http://www.wetware.demon.co.uk/misc/uteotw.html#18)

It didn't occur to me, either, until I read online that U2 have officially stated that it's supposed to be Judas singing to Jesus.

After that, it was just a matter of listening to the lyrics...

You wouldn't have heard of them unless you spent a lot of time in Alberta (they're a local Edmonton band) or New Zealand (where they apparently had a successful tour a few years back.) I'm really not sure what their biggest original hits have been, as most of their singles that got local airplay were traditional stuff ("What Shall We Do With A Drunken Sailor", that sort of thing.) They also did a cover of "The Last Saskatchewan Pirate" by the Arrogant Worms which did well enough that most Albertans think the Worms are covering Captain Tractor.

They're sort of, but not quite, an Albertan Great Big Sea. Most of their songs used to be at mp3.com, but I don't know if they're still online.

yay - got one!

Y'know, I don't actually know the name of the song or who it's by, but I know #7 is the song from the Sopranos by the way it's taken up residence in my head again. Some more.

Oh well, at least it's a nice song.

#11 is "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" by Blue Oyster Cult, and appropriate if I EVER heard one fof John Constantine. It was on the "Heavy Metal" soundtrack.

Captain Tractor

I've heard of 'em, and I'm way-down-South in Dixie. 'Course, that's mostly 'cause of the dueSouth soundtrack, after which I tracked down more.....

Hey, it's Sting. He's gotta be on any Constantine playlist.

I actually know a few more of these, but I'll let other people answer. And this list was pretty cool because it gave me VERY appropriate things to add to the playlist I made to cover the plot I'm involved in on my Potter RPG...heh. Thanks.

3. Michael Jackson - Thriller.
16. Queen and David Bowie - Under Pressure.
17. Emerson Lake and Palmer - I Believe in Father Christmas. (I've wondered for years, is that a song about hope or a song about lack of hope.)

#5 - send lawyers, guns and money. Think the original version is Warren Zevon?

That song - as well as the others that I recognized - is very appropriate *L*

oh and 13 is U2. Forget the title of it, but isn't it the one with the 'don't let the bastards grind you down' bit?

Love that song. Can never remember the names of half their songs though *L*

3. No one's going to save you from the beast about to strike.
"Thriller" - Micheal Jackson

4. The head nurse spoke up- she said, "Leave this one alone."
"Bad To The Bone" - um... *wracks brain* The only name coming to mind is John Couger Mellencamp and I'm sure that's not right. I can sing two other songs by him off the top of my head but can't think of his damn name. Screw it.

5. I'm the innocent bystander, but somehow I got stuck between a rock and a hard place and I'm down on my luck.
Warren Zevon (may he rest in peace), but on this one I can't think of the name of the song. Is it "Lawyers, Guns and Money?"

8. Yes, I was there too, and you know what they said? Well, some of it was true!
OO! The Clash, "London Calling"! (Love it!)

16. Turned away from it all like a blind man; sat on a fence but it don't work. Keep coming up with love but it's so slashed and torn...
"Under Pressure" - Queen, with David Bowie.

Number 14 sounds damned familiar but I can't get it.

Ick, only 5 out of 17. I'm obviously out of practice, I used to be good at this game.

Heh, guess I didn't do that bad after all...

It's a little hard to tell what they're singing in Coven's version, as well - I checked my own copy before posting that, and realized that it's just barely slurred enough that I can't be 100% certain. So, you still might be right as well, particularly since it isn't the same edition of the song.

Incidentally - I missed the "introduce yourself" thread a little while back, until it was too late; I found your LJ via a link to Hellblazer: Hogwarts on another set of Web forums, and stayed for that plus all the rest. It's always pleasant to find such a good writer whom I've never heard of before. (Your chapters tend to be shorter than I'd like, but one can't have everything, and it does mostly suit the storytelling style.)

The fact that "One Tin Soldier" actually manages to be as relevant for Constantine as it does has scarred me for life.

Nicely done.

The horror lies in listening to the originsl version of the song, then thinking how it still fits him.

*grins* Oh, it does. The lyrics are quite appropriate to him, which is why I suggested it instead of one of their others covers. Making it a punk version just made it that much better.
