Not Shiny: Sergeant Preston / LXG 1936 material

Okay, folks. I've got a new Diary of a Mountie entry up at sgt_preston. Thing is, it's the last one to date. . . the Diary was a transcription of two gaming sessions run by cadhla last summer. Total game time came out to something seven hours RL. And I've run out of game material.

Now, we had discussed the possibility of going to play-by-email format a while ago. That was allowed to lapse, but I figured I'd try raising the prospect again now that I've come to the end of my notes and such.

batyatoon, sdelmonte, akawil, agrumer, stakebait, ladymondegreen- is there any chance that after Passover's done with that you guys would be interested in getting cadhla to start all this again as a PBEM? Or something? I'd really like to play again, and I think we could manage it. I mean, if you don't, that's fine too. batyatoon and I could probably carry the stuff on as fanfic, as long as cadhla was willing to help. I'd rather not go that route if at all possible, since this is a game based on cadhla's vision and ideas, but it's there if need be.

So. . . when you get the chance, is there any chance you'd like to play again? I mean, once holidayfoo is out of the way?

And if not- batyatoon, or whoever, did you want to work up something together?

Don't really want to get into a serious 'fic-style followup if game doesn't go on, though.

I'm all for the game, but am not sure how a RPG by mail would work.

The ones I've seen have mostly been roster-based. The GM sends out a post to everyone in the game, and they send back their responses in a given order. If a scene or something involves conversation between two or more characters, it's usually customary for those people to have the conversation via email amongst themselves or by instant-messaging software, then have one of them email the result to everyone else. And if someone has to interrupt a conversation or scene, they throw in an email to everyone out of turn.

I hope you do something with it - I just got to the last entry yesterday and my desire for more Sgt Preston is in full bloom. And to think I had no idea of the wonderfulness of this character last week.:)

I have other stories about him scattered over my LJ, but they're easier to find in their original form- Word files on my hard drive. Want me to punt a few of them in your direction? Bear in mind that most of them take place before the League years and are basically fanfiction for the radio series.

Yes! :) Were you a fan of the radio series before you started playing the game, or after?

After. It came about something like this:

1. cadhla says that she's going to run a League game, and that we should find characters from stories or novels that were either written in, or set in, 1936. British for preference; Canadian or American acceptable if we could justify it.
2. I briefly consiered trying to play Lawrence E. G. Oates, the fellow on the Scott expedition who left the tent during a howling blizzard (ostensibly to spare his fellow explorers the burden of looking after him, since he was dying- I have my doubts about that). The man certainly would have a legend, but cadhla says no, got to stick to fictional.
3. Brief query, not particularly serious, reveals that both Superman (1938) and Batman (1939 in print; earlier in radio) are not permitted as they are classic examples of comic book superheroes and therefore inappropriate to the game.
4. I consider Alec Ramsey of the Black Stallion books, figuring that he's got the fastest damn racehorse on Earth and therefore has an excuse to travel. The books were set in the 1920's, after all. Unfortunately it is indicated to me that there really isn't much room, nor much call, for a racehorse on the docks of Glasgow, and that Alec's horse would be very likely to get killed.
5. Wanting someone who would at least be nominally subject to the British crown, I vaguely recall hearing of pulp-era stories about the Canadian Mounties, and sit down at google to do some searching. I don't recognise most of the names that come up on the first pass but dimly recall hearing of this 'Sergeant Preston' fellow- something about how elements of Superintendent Samuel Benford Steele's real-world life were possibly used to inspire the radio series writers- so I do some reading and order the radio series from a guy on eBay.
6. The CDs arrive the day after the first game session. Of course.

Okay, new question. What email address do you want me to start sending things to? I have every intention of posting this stuff on the web as fanfiction at some point (probably at my own web site, possibly in the 'miscellaneous' section at Fanfiction.net just because people might get bored with the rest of the Pit of Voles and give it a go), but right now none of it is exactly optimized for HTML.

Oh yes - best email to use for me is derien (at) rulesthe (dot) net. The one I list on my LJ is quite acceptable, too.:) What's the name on your email, so I don't accidently delete it with the 50 spams I toss out every morning and evening?

The first name will be J., and I'm going to be sending from either megaloceros.net (my own domain) or verizon.net. Either way the first part of the address wll be camwyn@ . Most of my non-work email addresses are some form of camwyn; the ones that aren't are generally some form of crowmark (an ElfQuest character I played for quite some time at TwoMoons MUSH).
