Through all the times when American media was too frenzied over semen on a dress to report on the rest of the world; through the times when American news outlets were screaming about liberal bias and conservative bias and fair and balanced and lying liars; through the stretches when all I could find in my newspaper was news on New Jersey and news on the Iraq war...

Through all of those times the BBC was there, and provided the news that I needed to know about the rest of the world. And they did it well, and more accurately than American media outlets did on the same stories. Yes, they've made mistakes. So have all the other news outlets. If for no other reason than their ability to give me a different, generally (not always, but generally) more clearheaded perspective... then I support and believe in the BBC.

(It has just occurred to me that I should probably disclose the following: On 9/13/01 I contacted the BBC News Online's 'were you there' web page and told them my impressions of New York on September 11th, thinking to thank the people who showed up to help in any way they could. They contacted me back and asked for permission to use what I had written. I have received three copies of their paperback book of reports and impressions on September 11th, and about 3/4 of a page of the book contains what I wrote.)
