Memo to self:
Sep. 7th, 2003 05:25 pmnext time I decide to come to downtown, I need to make the decision as early in the day as possible. That way, I can rent the bicycle before someone scarpers off with it. I left the hostel sometime around... mmph, I dunno, 12:30 this afternoon... and walked until I made my way down to Pioneer Park. I imagine it must be very impressive when the attractions are in full operation - lots of gold rush history stuff - but when everything except the Pioneer Museum is closed and there is an idiot woman whinging to the museum curator about how a YEAR ago she tried to JOIN the PIONEERS but she was BLACKBALLED and she never found out WHY and they KEPT her fifty DOLLARS and did she MENTION she NEVER FOUND OUT WHY and on and on and on, you really start wishing you had the option of getting into and out of the area more quickly.
I am going on the riverboat Discovery tomorrow. It is a three and a half hour voyage. You can find out about it here: http://www.riverboatdiscovery.com/ . Would have gone today at 2 but they were all booked up. Oh well. Tonight I am going to find a restaurant with some kind of saloonish atmosphere and eat dead animals and starches. I am also going to try to find my way to Immaculate Conception Church, which is supposed to be quite historic, having been moved whole and entire at some point in the 1911 time frame or so. Downtown proper is supposed to be fairly compact, so I will do my best to see whatever points of interest there are in the city area before dinner. After that it's likely back to the hostel, as I've got to walk - the buses don't run on Sundays. If nothing else this trip has been good for my calves, though lord knows they're protesting at the treatment.
