Like a number of roleplayers I know, I like to assemble soundtracks for my characters. I can usually come up with a theme song or two for almost any of the characters or NPC's I play, but my favoured characters - or anybody that I spend enough head time on - usually gets to the point where I need more than one song. Since I abhor wasting space on a CD, it usually goes from two or three songs to 'eee, gotta come up with eighteen tracks' in a hurry. I've succeeded at this a couple of times. Ask [livejournal.com profile] wheeker about the CDs I put together for Dave Grishin (my character) and Madison Carlisle (hers). I've done one up for Fang, at Ashes. I've also got a couple of CD's assembled for NPC's in VicMage.Asia - one for that world's version of Wong Feihung*, and two for the current occupant of the Dragon Throne.

I've been considering throwing a CD together for the setting in general for a while now. I think the inspiration for that came a month or two ago, when I was listening to Bon Jovi's 'It's My Life' and thought 'huh, this sounds like the Silver Dragons' theme music' - I'd just bought a bunch of Feng Shui books**. There's probably also a bit of influence from another source; after watching Bulletproof Monk, I wound up assembling a CD of tracks that ultimately coalesced into a sort of soundtrack for the Monastery of the Midnight Sun. I'd have to come up with songs for the various NPC factions, of course, and pick out just one or two really outstanding ones from the NPC tracks to add in. I'd also have to come up with a good groveling excuse for using nothing but Western music; I suppose the answer to that is that neither I nor my proposed players speak word one of Cantonese, the dominant language of the Empire in which the game is set. I do have to say that the soundtracks usually come out as reasonably good mix CD's even if you don't know what the rationale behind the song selection is - at least I think so, you'd have to ask [livejournal.com profile] wheeker, [livejournal.com profile] batyatoon or [livejournal.com profile] cadhla for their opinions, since they've received copies of previous soundtracks before.

If any of y'all are planning on playing in the VicMage.Asia game and would like a CD, let me know. I'm gonna see what I can come up with. I'd also be willing to punt one of the NPC soundtracks to you, as I've got those saved on my computer.

*I am so going to have to hide behind something large and indestructible when the players get to meet him - the only reason the HK fans in the group aren't going to maul me over what I've done with Fong Sai Yuk is that I don't think any of them are very big fans of The Legend

**I got lucky and nailed 'Wrapped Around My Finger' by the Police as the song for the Eaters of the Lotus. I have since been trying to decide whether 'We're Not Gonna Take It', from Twisted Sister, is more appropriate to a particularly angry group of the Dragons, the Jammers, or possibly some incredibly cranky leadership within the Guiding Hand who've looked at Western civilization one too many times and said 'the hell with you all'.
