camwyn: (jewelry)
Awake, which is a little unusual for 10 AM on a Saturday. This is because I'm the network administrator and this is our update weekend for the production servers, not because I particularly want to be awake. On the other hand I'm doing all the updating from my kitchen table and I have my cat curled up next to me, so that helps.

One of the women in my office asked to look at the things in my online store this past week. She decided she wanted some moonstone wire rings for a family member, but in a smaller size. I've prepared two in each of the wire colors she asked about, and I'll see which ones she wants on Monday. That's not the important part. The important part is that I mentioned this to someone else in meatspace, and he said he was glad my artistic work was being appreciated.

I'm not entirely sure I really think about the jewelry stuff as 'artistic work', tbh. Some of it is made from other people's patterns, or variants thereon; it's someone else's design and just my implementation. The part that isn't taken from other people's patterns is... I don't know. Maybe it's a mental distinction between 'art' and 'craft' that I hadn't thought of consciously before this. Maybe it's something else. I know I've caught myself thinking of the stuff I do with some of the cheaper wire and beads as 'doodling with my hands', since I tend to skip straight from mental images of earring or pendant ideas to physical implementation rather than pausing to draw it out on the page. (Drawing the ideas out usually only happens if I've been asked to make something for another person; it helps to ensure I'm working on the image they have in their heads rather than the one I have in mine. As yet I haven't really had anything sufficiently complicated as to merit pre-planning come to mind.) Maybe it's that I have a hard time thinking of 'art' applying to a process that is fundamentally rooted, for me, in 'I like shiny objects' and 'ooh, what can I do with this shiny object', with a side helping of 'is there a reason I should buy this in the store when I can get the pieces for something closer to what I want and put it together myself and then not only have a shiny object but have people be impressed by the fact that I can make shiny objects'.

.... there is a reason I named my company Crowmark Creations and it is at least 3/4 because crows also like shiny objects.
