1. What did you miss about England while in Paris, and vice-versa?

It's nigh impossible to get a proper meat pie in France. I realize the place is one of the grandest capitals of cuisine ever known, but there are days when I'd give a quarter of my library for plain and simple everyday English food, made by questionable means in a kitchen I'd just as soon not see for fear I'd find out more than I wanted to know.

Once I was in England again I wanted my library back. And a good wine selection, but that wasn't as important.

2. What was the most surprising single occurrence in your life?

It's deuced off-putting to not only bollix up a ritual, but to find that you're completely imperceptible. I mean, I've met people who tried to Gilgul me in past lives and didn't remember it, I've tracked Magdaleana to Tierra del Fuego after introducing her to my brother C. Stephen, and I've seen England finally say 'bugger it, let's give the Scots back their damned rock already', but not even being perceptible to the sense of touch is a shock that goes right down to the bone. Only since the sense of touch didn't register my presence, said shock was purely metaphorical.

3. What is your biggest regret?

Spending so many lives hiding. Reality is far more appealing if you're actually getting into it and experiencing it, not hiding in the interests of self-preservation.

4. If you could change one thing about the Order, what would it be?

There's a House or two that could stand about a week of coffee enemas and ten years' exile outside Athens, but I doubt that's what you mean. Were it up to me I'd institute a program of reviews of old policies every seven or eight years in the interest of catching old wrongs and righting them before they became ancient, traditional wrongs.

5. What is your favourite way to spend a morning?

Telephones off, hot breakfast made and at the ready for Magdaleana and myself, and a ward on the door indicating that I'm in Tierra del Fuego again. Between that and a nice thick pile of books, and a very pushy grey cat, I think that's a good way to fill up a morning.

1. Do you really think that you can change the world? Isn't that arrogant?

Everything changes the world, even if it never gets noticed. Even if it's only 'this morning the world had a pebble in the middle of the highway outside my house, and this afternoon the world had a pebble on the side of the highway'. If one man talking to five other men in a nice sunny park could set in motion the Wheel of Law and change my home world forever, then I don't see where arrogance factors into it.

2. What do you miss most about home?

English. Just because I grew up in Chinatown doesn't mean I didn't get raised to speak English. I miss hearing the language, and when I do hear it, I miss the sounds of American voices. I miss the music a lot too, but I miss the language more.

3. If you could go back and not take the trip that stranded you in the first place, would you?

No, I don't think I would do that. The trip happened. What happened, stays happened. If I were reborn in exactly the same circumstances and lived my life the same way, and got to the point of deciding to go or not only to be informed of the stranding, I'd probably only be more motivated to take the trip – except that I'd pack better.

4. What would you change, if anything, about your life?

I would change my life so that it included more toilets. Squatting's hard on the ankles.

5. If you returned to your original world, what would you miss the most about your current one?

Aijou.

Anselm amuses me. I miss him.

Now you get to interview one of mine -- Ansley, Mags or Aijou, preferrably. I'm trying to keep Judy out of this, she scares me.
