Got my day off today. I need to find a cell phone battery charger for an LG VX 6000 (I seem to have lost mine) and then possibly make my way to the Louisiana Museum of Rural Life. I'd quite like to see it, if it's open.

Meanwhile, I am privately rejoicing that somewhere, someone else is setting up twenty-two laptops today. Not that I don't know how to do it and not that I don't appreciate the chance to do the work for the Red Cross and all, but dang, by the end of yesterday you could probably have brought Jacques Chirac in as a volunteer and said 'this man needs a cellular phone and a car charger and he is the Big Kahuna of France' and all I would have said was 'have him fill out a greenie and take it to Pat and she'll issue him one'. I slept a lot this morning.

Back to work tomorrow.

Well, my day of liberty is almost at an end. I'll be heading back to the shelter in about fifteen minutes, and tomorrow it's back to work.

Kind of weird to realize that. And kind of annoying to realize just how desperately I want to get a crack at communicating with people Back Home tonight- annoying because we have to turn off our cell phones or put them on manner-mode when we go into the sleeping area of the shelter. Text messaging might be okay but I don't know if the phone buzzing would be enough for me to notice. Still, I could do with conversation from people I already know, not just other Red Crossers...

At least the kid who got assigned to my function yesterday (he's 18) is a gamer geek, so there's at least some hope of similar conversation there. But being able to read and write at a certain measure of leisure is something I miss.

Of course, the rest of my brain promptly coughs meaningfully and looks at the kajillions of people who've been forced to flee their homes, who haven't got anything like the opportunities I do have, and starts on the standard Catholic 'you should be grateful for what you have' schtick, but that doesn't make it any easier. That just makes me feel more tired.

Feh. I'll do my work. I'll steal what little time I can. I'll write if I can manage,or knit if I can manage, and look for what 19 I can- Batya, the Red Cross headquarters is directly across the road from a building whose signs all just say "CORT", does that count for aught?

... also, from where I sit, several books are visible with the title "The President Has Been Shot", but due to the typeface I honestly thought they were entitled "The Present Has Been Shit". No significance there, just sayin'.

Ten minutes left. Off to read more now. Will be glad to hear from folks later even if it's only through buzzy phone.
