Dolphins. yay.
May. 23rd, 2004 12:34 amGot up this morning to dire prophecies of thunderstorms and other horrid weather. Drove 150 miles to Cape May anyway, 'cos I wanted to get in some whale watching today and it's the only place I know in Nwe Jersey that does it. I got five hours of boat time and quite a few dolphin sightings, including one of a baby the captain said was probably about six hours old, but no whales. Also, a lot of lighthouse viewing- due to poor enrollment in the 6 PM lighthouse cruise, the company combined their usual 1 PM whalewatch cruise with the lighthouse cruise, which is why I got five hours at sea instead of the three I was expecting. I got some film photos of the fins, but no digital- camera battery gave out.
Also I got a film photo of one of the worst-placed outhouses I've ever seen. As the captain said, "man, if I were the keeper at that lighthouse and I had to go to the bathroom in wintertime, I'd take one look at that drop and just hold it until spring.."
Have also seen what is apparently either the second-biggest, or the biggest, oil tanker in the world. Did not get photos as it was too far away for my camera to get a decent shot, but Jesus, I've seen islands smaller. Damn thing can't get through the Panama Canal.
Will be getting the film developed ASAP, but right now, the big thing for me is that my semicircular canals still think I'm shipside. Or in the car. One or the other. I feel as if I'm bobbing up and down, and while normally I like that aspect of going on a boat, it's a bit unnerving right now. I'm going to bed and hoping the world is a bit more stable come the morning.
