Mountain Dew, chocolate cupcakes, and a set of very small toothpicks: the things I need this morning to keep my eyes open at the staff meeting that looms over 11 AM through lunchtime.

feh.

At least I will not be expected to catch up this morning. no one could on a schedule like that. It's just that last night my body assumed that, since I'd let it sleep until 11 the night before, it didn't have to go to sleep until later than usual. So of course I am less than enthusiastic about morning today.

But I do have Mountain Dew and vending machine cupcakes, so that helps.

Plus I have paid my car insurance for now and have sent off my credit card payment, that's good too. I've finished knitting the back of my Big Red Jacket Thingy, and started on the left front side. I've gotten a good ways along with the DNA scarf for [livejournal.com profile] mountainspeak and the pointy prime-numbers-and-Fibonacci-sequence hat for [livejournal.com profile] batyatoon and the hat for my grandma, though I only brought the left front of the BRJT and the DNA scarf with me to work today. I have stuff waiting in my PO box (including a bill for a copy of Monstrous Regiment, but I can pay that, no problem). And the chapter's payin' for lunch 'cos of the staff meeting. So that helps too.

We're having a grand opening ceremony for our shiny new donated building next Monday, with the president of the Red Cross there, and the lone man who donated all the $$ to get this place built, and everything. Part of the opening is going to involve the presentation of flags and patriotic music and such.

Last week we had a gala fundraiser at which God Bless America was sung.

Today, in discussing the grand opening, this dialogue took place:

CHAPTER CEO: ... and a flag that flew over the US Capitol building. And then- those of you who went to the Gala will remember Mr. Anderson's stirring rendition of God Bless America. He'll be singing-
CHAPTER EMPLOYEE #1: It wasn't Mr. Anderson, was it?
CHAPTER EMPLOYEE #2: I don't think it was. . .
CHAPTER CEO: Hmm. You're right. Mr. Anderson was the bagpipes, I'm sorry. Mr. Smith did the singing. Anyway, Mr. Smith will be singing something in that vein. . .

I don't know which is a freakier image: Agent Elrond belting out "God Bless America", or Keanu Reeves on the bagpipes.

It is, however, related to a writing exercise I did a while back - I don't know if I posted it here or not. This features Ira Dayan and Kenny Aoi, the British Columbian boys from a set of writing exercises where I had to do fifteen minutes' worth of writing starting with the phrase "I don't remember." Eventually these two are going to be the focal points of a hard science fiction novel, but as is quite common for me I developed a case of the accomplishment willies about this novel a long time ago and I have been fearful of trying to actually WRITE any of it since. I have decided that I am going to have to do approximately 500 words a day set in that universe if I am ever to get off my ass and write this stuff at all, so- here. About 460 words or so.

I would ordinarily ask for commentary, but this piece is too short and you haven't even met the characters before, so it wouldn't be fair. You've got nothing to go on. )
