Aug. 28th, 2003 02:53 pmTomorrow's my last day at the office for a little bit more than two weeks. I asked for this vacation time back in something like April, and it's been marked on the calendar all that time. I'm going to Alaska - I leave on 1 September, the plane returns me to NJ on 16 September, and I spend 17 September sleeping and otherwise recovering from jet lag.
I am nervous. Not about the flight; flights have never made me nervous, unless you count the last four minutes when a plane comes in over La Guardia and performs the "AIEEE it's all WATER it's nothing but WATER we are going to land in the WATER ohwaitIseetherunwaynow" landing. I grew up in the very literal shadow of the La Guardia Airport flight path; if you look at pictures from my time in kindergarten that include airplanes, they almost all have their wheels down. That, or they're sea planes. That's what flew over my house - planes in takeoff or landing mode, and seaplanes aiming for the Marine Air Terminal. It's hard to be afraid of flying when you grow up like that... no, what makes me nervous is that I am going to be away from work for two weeks. I am the tech person in the office. I know most of the time they can manage without me, but I"m afraid something will go horribly wrong and they'll phone me up in Alaska and I'll have to pull out my goddamned cell phone in the middle of something INTERESTING and answer some stupid-ass question. Or, worse, that nothing will go wrong and that they'll look at my position the next time the budget cuts come and say 'hmm, we did just fine without her before'.
My boss assures me that this is not the case, that my job is not going anywhere. Other chapter managers assure me that I am essential. I am still nervous. The desire to get the hell away from the office, however, outweighs this.
I am going to Alaska on Monday. Whee!
