NationStates gave me an issue last night that was basically a decision between 'outlaw all private industry for the sake of the environment' or 'abolish some of our existing regulations for the sake of attracting business again'. Tuonela's economy had Imploded, and our tax rates were up to 41%, so as much as I love the environment I chose to look after our people. It's right hard to run a state without at least a little something to base the economy on...

Came back this morning and my economy was listed as Fragile rather than Imploded. AND our private sector is back in existence; it's characterized as Small, and it's led by the Information Technology industry again. Weird, as I was expecting it to be Beef/Porot-Based Agriculture, but I'm not arguing. Plus the tax rate is down to 41%, which is lower than it was when I started the game. Hell, the private sector is now larger than it was when I started the game. I can live with this.

Tuonela is the fourth or fifth most liberal government in the Arctic Circle. Our political freedoms are currently listed as Below Average; this is because when I chose to outlaw the death penalty, I did not read the issue closely enough to realize that in so doing I was outlawing political parties who advocated it as well. (We can afford to outlaw the death penalty in Tuonela right now. We haven't got a crime rate. At all.) OUr civil rights are Good, though, and we outlawed surveillance cameras. I fully expect to be informed that our children have the foulest mouths in the region shortly as I have been presented with a Free Speech question and chose the most liberal option, which included someone saying the price we pay for free speech includes dirty words. Ah well, we'll survive. Tuonela's children are getting an excellent education; they'll learn to control their mouths in time. (Seriously. Tuonela's lack of crime is attributed to a combo of the police and our progressive policies on social welfare and education.)

If you want a look at our fine, if somewhat cold and dark, country, Tuonela can be seen at this link.

Yay me.
