SARS in Toronto. SARS in Hong Kong. SARS in Westchester County, New York (woman who spent 3 wks. in China came back w/virus). I've got friends all over the place who're in the path of the stupid virus and there's nothing I can do about it. In a sick, perverted way I almost welcome it; I'd rather hear news about SARS than about the war, because nobody at all is trustworthy about war reporting. Epidemic stuff is at least interesting, and can be viewed with a scientific fascination.
Unfortunately, as my HK penpal said, I can't really travel to China until the disease runs its course - or at least dies down. Now, I wasn't planning on going to China until September anyway, so it might work out... or it might be 1919 come again, at least in terms of how long it lasts if not in terms of lethality. I'd very much prefer that it not be 1919 again. Too many people died, too many people were horribly sick. We have better understanding now. Let's hope it helps.
But if it doesn't, I'm going to ask my parents to part-finance a trip to Alaska instead. It's no China, but it's someplace I've always wanted to see, and I can either visit the Denali area or ride the Alaska Marine Highway ferries over the same routes as the cruise ships for a whole lot less $$. Plus, since it's ferries, I can always hop off when they stop at a town and stay on land overnight if there's something I want to see, then get on the ferry again the next day. Airfare to Wrangell costs around $600 at this point if I give the same dates I was planning on for China.
I'd rather go to China, but if the plague is still raging, at least I have that much of an option.
