Justice League: War was almost as painful to watch as Throne of Atlantis.

Justice League: Gods and Monsters, however, was fantastic.

(And there is a tiny part of the back of my brain that kinda wants to try out the Hernan Guerra Superman in RP, since he's not the same character as Clark Kent/Kal-El.)

Only seen the shorts that precede Gods and Monsters, but I loved what I saw of Superman and Wonder Woman. Surprised that Bruce Timm would do something this dark, but not surprised that it's better than 2 films that boil down good but not great comics to "fight! fight! fight!"

The characterization of everybody except Batman and Flash in JL: War and JL: Throne of Atlantis was just completely shot to hell- okay, Hal Jordan was within recognizable parameters, but was a lot more hotheaded and impulsive than I remember him being. Wonder Woman was a bloodthirsty combat-seeker, Supes was only too happy to cause property damage and kill things rather than trying to find any other way to handle them, Billy Batson gave the impression that the Wisdom of Solomon had been replaced with the Wiseassery of Some Random Guy... Oh, and Cyborg was just- if that's his New 52 origin and personality then I don't think I want to deal with that version of him. (Although he was more tolerable and more like himself in Throne of Atlantis, but even so, he basically existed in Throne of Atlantis so Batman could have him do things that the Bat-Computer would normally have done. One got the impression his part was being written so the black guy would have something to do on screen.) Batman himself was in an incredibly pissy mood the whole time, but that's just Batman. He cycles moods like that until someone in the Bat-Family calls him on it. I can live with that.

I can't speak to whether the villains were true to their usual characterizations or not. Darkseid seemed about right in War, but that's Darkseid. Ocean Master gave the impression of being powered entirely by ham. Black Manta was in about the same league. I don't know if they're like that on a regular basis. The only Black Manta I'm familiar with is the one in Young Justice, and this was not Kaldur'ahm's father, so I can't judge this one by those standards.

Gods and Monsters was pretty dark, but even with the darkness it had better writing and, frankly, gave us what I genuinely felt were morally better protagonists by the end of the story. Even if they had been killing people from day one. They were capable of changing themselves, once they recognized what needed to be done.

Plus, gotta admit, the Gods and Monsters version of Lex Luthor was kind of amazing.

Well, that is good to know. I will have to check out Gods and Monsters and ignore the other two.

Gods and Monsters is the one with the alternate universe Justice League, or something else?

AU Justice League, yeah. There's a Kryptonian named Superman and a human named Batman; Wonder Woman's not an Amazon. No other League members in evidence.
