Those of you who listen to Great Big Sea: do any of you happen to know the song "General Taylor"'s origins? I mean, is that Canadian or English in origin, how old is it, and who is it about? I've tried searching but all I come up with is stuff about Zachary Taylor having a stormy meeting with some general or other, so I must be searching wrong.

I'd like to put it in the mouth of one of my characters and I want to be sure it's IC for him to know it.

Here's some information from The Mudcat Cafe:

I know that Full Frontal Folk does a cover of it that's almost entirely different. It sounds like it's been crossed with Pay Me My Money Down (http://www.chivalry.com/cantaria/lyrics/pay-me.html).

It's a pretty obscure song, but I think it does have something to do with Zachary Taylor. My guess is that the lyrics have gotten corrupted and changed as time's gone on and we'll probably never know for sure what it was originally about, but assuming there is a Zachary Taylor link, that would make it most likely mid-late 19th century, American (or possibly Canadian).

By the way, what *is* that in your icon?
