Hm.

Apparently I'm going to be in the newspaper fairly soon- seems the Newark Star-Ledger is doing a story on Zipcars in the NYC area. Zipcar just contacted me and asked if I'd be willing to have my picture taken at my car reservation tonight. They're gonna knock $25 off my reservation for the evening. I can live with that, esp. since I was about to cancel the reservation and make one for tomorrow night (I'm visiting my parents instead of picking up the cats like I'd planned- cats tomorrow).

I can live with that.

For us furriners (outside NY/NJ area) what is Zipcar?

It's a service that allows its members to rent cars by the hour, so that they can have motor vehicles when they need them without having to fuss about things like insurance, gas, tolls, or alternate-side-of-the-street parking. The cars cost between $8.50 and $16 an hour to rent and they're scattered throughout the metropolitan areas of the cities Zipcar operates in, which at the moment are... um, I think NYC, Hoboken, Washington DC, Boston, and Chapel Hill, NC. There's an annual fee of $50, and Zipcar drivers are expected to keep the cars neat and fueled- you're supposed to fill up the gas tank at 1/4 tank remaining, but Zipcar provides you with a card to cover the cost of gas. Same deal with tolls; there's an EZ Pass transponder in each car that pays your tolls for you (this is an issue in the NYC area, believe me).

It does sound handy, like something I would be interested in if I lived in the city instead of the 'burbs.
