List thingy stolen from [livejournal.com profile] tartanshell.

Before I do the memesheep thing, I would like to ask if any of y'all reading this want a Hogswatch* card. Send me your snail address- my email address is my LJ user id at megaloceros dot net- and I'll see what I can do.

Okay. Now. The holidayHogswatch wish meme.

Step One

- Make a post (public, friendslocked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.

- If you wish for real life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.

- Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ, or link to this post (it'll be public) so that the holiday joy will spread.

Step Two

- Surf around your friendslist (or friendsfriends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:

- If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it.

You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call.

There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

1. Saying 'something from my Amazon wish list' feels like a bit of a cop-out. Too many choices, esp. since I tend to throw stuff onto that list to remind myself 'oh, hey, you find this interesting- consider buying it later'. But this book would so totally rock, and I know my family won't dig far enough into the list to see it.

2. So would this book.

3. A decent method for straightening out the connector cables on my circular knitting needles. I don't mind the condition of the cables on my Addi Turbos, but not all of my circs are Addis and dammit, they come with the cables all curly from weeks in the package. It's very annoying.

4. Some kind of icon based on any of the fic I've written. I know I already have an assload of icons, but it'd still be kind of cool. And I'd only use it for posting more fic, which would provoke me to get off my sodding arse and write more Hellblazer: Hogwarts. Or something in the Vimes of Numenor line I've been pondering.

5. Come to think of it, if anyone else wants to give Vimes of Numenor a go, the only members of the family I've nailed down so far are Sam & Co., Lindorie Vimes and her dad (Dad made an assassination attempt on Ar-Pharazon and Sauron; it didn't go well), Eradan Vimes (captain of the Minas Tirith guard in the days of Ecthelion I) and Cirion Vimes (captain under Denethor). There's room and I'd love to see if anyone else is equally demented.

6. Weird yarn that isn't horribly skanky and old. I keep getting to the eyelash yarn bin at Treasure Island and not having the nerve to buy any 'cos I tell myself it'll go out of style, but that doesn't cure the urge to get some and knit something with it just for the hell of it.

7. I haven't GM'ed in a dog's age, and I'd really love to run something- possibly in the setting [livejournal.com profile] cadhla created and I embroidered on, also known as VicMage.Asia. Of course, that requires players with an interest in the setting, which is based off of Mage: The Ascension. It also requires permission from [livejournal.com profile] cadhla.

8. Permission to BLOW THE LIVING SHIT OUT OF WHOEVER WROTE THE LATEST COMMERCIAL FOR NORTEL. Those singing kids going "this is the way we butter the bread, butter the bread, butter the bread" are sounding entirely too Children of the Corn-ish for my tastes. Don't know what I mean? Turn on CNBC during business hours and sit through two rounds of commercials. You WILL hear it eventually. -- Okay, I've got this. Cool beans!

9. If y'all are on my friends list, or I am on yours, and we seem to have a reasonable amount in common by your lights, I think I'd rather like to meet you. I work in Manhattan and I have a monthly train pass, so I can get into the city on weekends or stay late some night if that's more convenient to you.

10. Canadian foo. Icons, desktop image files, actual souvenir stuff, whatever. I know this is opening the door to a whole world of trouble, given just how much crap they sell in their souvenir stores, but what the hell, why not. Note, however, that Shania Twain, Celine Dion, Jim Carrey, Alanis Morissette, Terrance and Philip, and Degrassi anything are not included. Neither is aught to do with Dudley Do-Right, including the Brendan Fraser movie; it caused a friend of mine who owns every other movie Brendan ever appeared in to hiss and make the anti-vampire cross with her fingers, so I’m not touchin' it with a ten meter cattle prod.

I would prefer respectful, but funny is ok too. Alaska stuff acceptable if you can't stomach the Canadian angle for some reason.

*May or may not contain actual references to Hogswatch. It's just that my friendslist alone includes several atheists, several agnostics, a bunch of Jews of varying stripes, quite a lot of pagans, at least one Bokononist, at least one Catholic-in-the-works, and quite a lot of people whose religious beliefs or lack thereof are unknown to me. I refuse to use the generic 'holidays' reference because it just sounds lame, so I'm seizing on Pratchett's fictional holiday and leaving it at that.

Permission granted, Captain.

8. Permission to BLOW THE LIVING SHIT OUT OF WHOEVER WROTE THE LATEST COMMERCIAL FOR NORTEL.

Granted.

Love,

FRANK!

*girlish shriek of joy, gratitude and glee*

You are a sweetheart. I promise never to shoot you.

I'll tell her.

[identity profile] lasa.livejournal.com 2004-11-26 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I'm going to give you #3 right now. Soak them in warm water for about a half hour, then hang them from one needle. They won't be totally completely uncurly, but it sure helps.

and give me the promised contact info and I'll see about #6.
(It's so nice to be a designer and get yarn for free - but you sure wind up with some weird stuff!)

Contact Info

Thanks for the address. It wasn't on your list, but something small from China will go out to you on Monday. And, Hogmanay is a real holiday in Scotland, as you probably know. I myself celebrate Yule - the Winter Solstice - in a BIG way. The LIGHT starts coming back...

[identity profile] pandoras-closet.livejournal.com 2004-11-26 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd take you up on #9, but I'm on the other side of the country, so that's a bit difficult.

Um, put me down for 8.

Took care of pickled, canned, potted, preserved and blown up.

It's on its way.

7) Last time was FUN.

invitation

I mentioned #9 to G, and Cadhla being in town soon, and he suggested offering you crash space here if there's a gathering at Batya's ("duh - of course; thanks for thinking of that" sometimes I love the way he puts things together *fast*). So, consider yourself invited (even if there is no gathering). We're across the park from them, about 25-30 minutes' brisk walk & less by car/bus, and right by a subway stop.

6. Weird yarn that isn't horribly skanky and old.

What's your definition of 'weird'? Are we talking eyelash and other novelties, or would sock yarn with a metallic thread make you happy as well? Or just plain old boucle do?

[identity profile] neotoma.livejournal.com 2004-11-30 09:42 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm going to the yarn shop tommorow. I'll see what's in the oddball bin. Do you object to synthetics or have any allergies? You might wind up with two balls of cotton/latex, a ball of bamboo, and a bag of mohair eyelash, know what was in that bin the last time I checked...

Due to my country, it's #10.

I'll give you the easy ones first - places I know where backgrounds that are canadian are, where I get stuff for my desktop sometimes:
http://www.ontariotravel.net/TcisCtrl?language=EN&site=consumers&key1=postcards
http://www.trailcanada.com/photos/wallpapers.asp
http://www.iam.ca/downloads/ (yes, a majority of beer ones but the i am.ca thing is universal up here - and some aren't too beery *L*)
and http://wallpapers.cambridgeweb.net/

You may have seen these before but figured I'd mention as I've gotten some from there.

hehe. I also know of a page where you can get more, however, they're themed to a certain canadian comedian as well as the canadian thing so ... *L* not quite the same

I must contemplate what other insane canadiana to go with ...hmm ... *G*

[identity profile] jjloa.livejournal.com 2004-12-01 09:59 am (UTC)(link)
The address above, I am guessing is good for canadiana as well? *G*

cool :) btw - I apologize ahead of time for the incredibly ugly looking box (for a kettle) that I will be shipping it in today. It is incredibly old and ugly, but it's the only box I had (I keep way too many for shipping purposes) that fit the size perfectly *G*
