*sigh*
School shooting in Germany. 18 dead.
My first thought on seeing the headline at BBC News Online was "Oh, God..."
My second thought was "Thank God it wasn't in this country."
My third was "... but their government and the international media will probably find a way to make it sound like America's responsible for it, culturally or morally or something, because everything bad is always our fault."
I feel like such a scum.
My deepest and profoundest apologies to anyone German who's reading this. I am very, very sorry for your country's loss, and for the hurt of anyone you may have known who may have been affected by this terrible crime. I hope you were not hurt, and I hope no one you know was hurt or killed. And I hope that my foolish, indiscreet thoughts ... well, I hope you can forgive me for those. I'm really sorry.

Agh
Not Americas' fault that things like this happen as such. Gun culture getting popularised, that gets lain at the door of the media I think.
Guns don't kill people, people kill people... but without a gun it gets an awful lot harder to do it wholesale.
Some reject from the rubber room comes into my place of work and starts blazing away at our 1400 pupils and 100 staff, the staff have Sweet Fanny Adams chance of stopping them. That nutcase has a knife and I feel a lot more confident about being able to use some of the larger pieces of equipment in the defense of the innocent.
I live in the UK, we don't NEED guns here... last time I looked, nobody had to defend their homes against ravening packs of urban foxes (rolled up newpapers or a boistrous common cat will see them off thank you very much). I don't need a 20aught6 to protect ma womenfolk againsts badgers neither.
Guns bad. No legal guns makes all guns illegal, makes ammo getting into circulation hard, makes me happy (Letting 'explodes when you try to use it' pistol ammo onto the black market wouldn't do any harm either).
I have a cold, colds make me all fascistic. Sorry.
IT'S NOT AMERICAS' FAULT.
Re: Agh
Yes, a gun makes it easier to kill people in job lots. It's also more difficult to stop an individual armed wth a firearm if you've only got a knife or club. For murder in bulk quantities, explosives are both more efficient & much more difficult to prevent.
