Well, ideally people wouldn't carry any backpacks or bulky packages on the transit system ANYWAY. I have yet to have a trip into and out of Manhattan where I got to spend the entire trip seated; a person with a backpack effectively takes up one and a half to two units of standing space. But yes, the man's clearly been swallowing his Listerine.
