One other effect of reading your post: I was also at ground zero on 9/11 and now I stupidly can't stop wondering if maybe I've seen you.
I spent most of the day itself at a Red Cross vehicle on West Broadway, near Duane Street (possibly Reade, I forget which). Didn't get to the actual site until around ten PM, because I didn't want to come off as a tragedy voyeur. Was dragged there by a fellow Red Cross worker, and given a mask by a guy in emergency room clothes when we arrived at the site. I was wearing my hair in a ponytail, and my shirt was a Red Cross polo shirt with patches on both sleeves, one small patch on the front, and a big Disaster Services patch on the back. Black pants, and totally inappropriate shoes (office loafers).
Same clothing and hair on day 2, but on day 2 I had a hat and was stationed on Liberty Street, which was one block south of where the Towers had been.

And thank you... I know what you mean.
