All your concerns are legit and if I were you, I would not travel. But Amtrak has decamped to the new Moynihan Train Hall, which is in the old Farley Post Office and is, judging by the photos a lot airier. Still not something I would trust, and I don't know where you have to go to get NJT. But it might actually be less of a hazard than everything else.
