Hola, all.

Realized it's been a little bit longer than usual since I posted here last. Things are going okay; I'm posting and reblogging (mostly reblogging) on Tumblr. I'm also getting things together for online handmade jewelry sales- last week I got my business certificate! Turns out Workbar, the co-working space company, has a 'community' option for people who only need a physical place of business on a very limited basis, and the city of Boston seems to be okay with that as an address (it is, after all, commercial real estate). I'll be setting up an account at Aftcra.com to sell stuff. Aftcra is an online craft seller that's based in Wisconsin, and their big distinguishing points are: 1. All sellers based in the United States. 2. No 'vintage' or 'antique' stuff, and no craft supplies, just handmade items. 3. No listing fees, you get charged when you sell. 4. Smaller than Etsy so you don't get completely lost in a sea of other sellers. I get the feeling on Etsy that the size of the jewelry section is on par with the population of Hoboken...

Anyway. I'll let you know when I have things available.

In the meantime, on other fronts, I am getting closer to my first solo flight. We've been practicing autorotations the last several lessons and this weekend my instructor wants me to come in for ground class so I'll be prepping for the written exam- after you solo you need to pass a written exam and an oral exam and get some night hours and solo hours and a cross-country flight before you can take your checkride with the FAA examiner. So there's that. And also I am dealing with a next-door neighbor who represents the first time I've actually called the police on someone, because it gets a little gross here. ) We'll see what happens from here on that front.

That's it for now. Hope your day is going well.

My bank has just informed me that multiple accounts including my own are showing fraudulent withdrawals from another bank's ATM. The fraudulent withdrawals are coming from an ATM at 627 Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge, MA. This is a TD Bank location. I am not a TD Bank customer and have not to my knowledge used this ATM. If you have an account at a Boston-area bank, especially if it's Citizens Bank , do yourself a favor and check your account balance.

And call your bank IMMEDIATELY if unfamiliar ATM withdrawals appear.

Heard from the landlord; he says he can't sign off on me registering a business with the apartment's address after all.

Any of you reading this happen to be homeowners who live in Massachusetts who would be open to renting me the use of your address instead?

I have a vague recollection of someone in the past month or two mentioning that they needed my snail address, but I never got around to answering them. If you are reading this and you are that person, please let me know.

Unrelated: very little is better than walking into the office the weekend after a horror show like the Wcry outbreak and not hearing a damn thing from my users other than complaints about Bloomberg. I spent most of Saturday the 13th updating every single server in the organization, and I had been approving updates for the desktops on an every-other-day schedule, and it was just... really kind of lovely to walk in and know that nothing bad at all had happened this weekend because of those actions.

These past few days I've been looking to register as a business with the state of Massachusetts so I can sell the jewelry I've made online. I'm aware that lots of people don't actually go through with this before selling things online, and I'm also aware that I'm doing this as a hobby so registering may be overkill, but I'd like to be able to offer stuff aboveboard and pay sales taxes properly and all of that. Most of the process is pretty simple, but there's an issue: I don't own my home. I rent an apartment. And today I spoke to my landlord; he doesn't like the idea of me operating a business out of the apartment. He's offered to look at the papers involved but I don't know whether he's likely to give the okay. For the moment I'm assuming the answer is no.

Can't register a business with a PO box or with a UPS Mailbox With Real Street Address(tm)!. I already checked.

Not sure how to proceed from here.

Every web site I look at for advice on how to begin selling jewelry online as a means of getting it out of the house and into the hands of friends assumes that I am trying to operate as a business, rather than as a hobby that happens to occasionally sell things. The legal difference between these two states involves making a profit two or three years out of five, and determines how much you're allowed to deduct from your taxes. The personal difference is how serious you are and how much time, money, etc. you're planning on investing in the thing.

I'm not planning on making jewelry-selling a business to any great degree. I'm just looking to register everything necessary to keep the state of Massachusetts and the IRS from freaking out if I do manage to sell stuff online. So that's hobby status. Nevertheless, I have followed the advice of the various OF COURSE YOU ARE STARTING A BUSINESS TO SUPPORT YOURSELF, WHY WOULD YOU LOOK FOR ADVICE IF YOU DIDN'T WANT TO RUIN YOUR HOBBY ENJOYMENT BY MAKING IT SOMETHING YOU HAD TO DO ALL THE TIME EVER sites, and written a business plan.

It includes the sentence 'If the business turns a profit at the end of one year I shall buy a paper party hat, and if it turns a profit three years out of five, I shall celebrate with a wooden kazoo'.

Signed up for my third stair climb of the season yesterday. This one's for Wediko School, which is a New England school for kids with mental health and emotional issues. I backed them last year after I found out about them during a stretch of jury duty, and I haven't been able to find anything bad about them, unlike a lot of other places that claim to be working for kids with issues. These guys actually seem to help. So I'll be doing 46 floors on May 7th to raise money for them, if anyone's interested.

... sorry, that wasn't my best post ever, but I'm tired this morning and my coffee hasn't kicked in yet.

I need bookcases.

Multiple. I'll settle for one that's over six feet tall.

However, the landlord says no putting holes in the walls, and a six foot tall bookcase kind of needs to be braced.

Anyone have suggestions on how to do this without violating my lease? The ceiling's a little too high, otherwise I'd be looking into spring rods of some kind- not to mention that I don't know what it's made of or if it'd stand up to constant pressure.

Awake. Head slightly throbby. Doing more or less okay otherwise.

I haven't been able to get a flight lesson in for a few weeks. When you need to practice hovering, prevailing 16-20 knot winds are not your friend (esp. since students aren't supposed to have the controls above prevailing 18 knots anyway and if the spread between 'prevailing' and 'gusts' is too big the instructor is supposed to just land and give up on the lesson). This weekend, hopefully. We'll see.

Did get to pick over the shoreline near me for sea glass twice, though. Which was nice; even though we were close to high tide I found a good many bits of jewelry-usable glass, removed a small but respectable amount of trash, and only found one bone, which I am almost certain came from a sheep. It had a spine coming off it that didn't match with what I remembered of any of the human vertebrae, anyway, and it was too small to be from an adult cow. Looked too small to be from an adult pig, either. I should've taken a picture of it next to a quarter for scale, but I did at least take a picture in case the question came up.

... look, we had an actual corpse wash up on Deer Island near my favorite bike path in 2015. Between that and knowing about the Salish Sea mystery feet, I kind of feel I need to keep an eye out for Things That Would Necessitate A Phone Call To The Police when I'm hunting sea glass.

That having been said I've been practicing wire wrapping and got rather a nice ring out of it (pattern from a book but we all have to start somewhere). I'll be making another one fairly soon before trying to do up a freeform wrapped seaglass bracelet. Hopefully I won't shred my fingers too much in the process; I need to get some Coban wrap for my fingers. It's been recommended by one of the instructional videos I've been watching as a good barrier between my fingers and the wires that would otherwise be kind of skin-shreddy.

More later as events warrant.

Took yesterday off. I have a tendency to forget to use my vacation days anyway so the Day Without A Woman thing wasn't a problem; I got my work for the day dealt with ahead of time anyway, just in case.

Understand, my office treats me well and with respect. I get paid a pretty damn good salary for my job and they cover my health insurance and a lot of job training and certification costs. I wasn't trying to strike to make a point with my employers yesterday. I was trying to be part of the group that was pulling out of the economy in general, just for one day. I know it's absolutely nothing compared to what my grandfather and great-grandfather went through as organized manual laborers, and I know it was almost completely symbolic, but I did it anyway. And with all the crap going on in the news lately and the list of Congresspeople's phone numbers and Congressional committee offices' phone numbers in my call log for the past few weeks I kind of needed to step away from things for one day anyway.

(I have something of an urge to print out that list of "OMG THESE NIGHTMARE BILLS WERE INTRODUCED TO CONGRESS WHILE YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU WERE DISTRACTED BY THE RUSSIAN THING, YOU MEMESHEEP" legislation and take a match to the printout. Given that at least six or seven of those bills were bills I'd long since called my Congressbeings about, I resent some random widespread image smugly assuming that I wasn't Paying Enough Socially Acceptable Attention To The Right Things. I know it's not directed at me personally but that doesn't make the YOU ARE A MEDIA SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP sense go away any faster.)

Having said that, I spent about an hour yesterday on the Boston Harbor side of the Winthrop shoreline at low tide. There was a lot of sea glass to gather. I wound up throwing one spectacularly blue piece of glass back because it was only barely abraded. It was the bottom of a bottle and the size of the palm of my hand, but you could still see most of the markings, and it was way too thick to wear effectively as jewelry. Not to mention that, like I said, it was barely abraded. It didn't look like sea glass, it looked like interestingly colored trash. So it went back in the hopes that someone else would find it later, when it was in better condition. I got a good number of other pieces the size of a quarter or larger, plus one slightly smaller piece of actual red glass. Not sure how I'm going to mount that, but it's going to be special. You don't see red glass often. The other stuff I'm planning on selling once it's wrapped and I have stringing material to hang it on.

I should note that I also filled a plastic bag from the drugstore with other trash. Standing policy- if I take something I like from the beach, whether it's glass or shells or interesting rocks, I have to take at least one or two pieces of trash away as well. I owe it to the ocean.

This one's not a donation option.

I'm just showing off some wire work I've been practicing. Once I get to the point where I feel like it'd be worthwhile to use precious metal wire instead of the stainless steel I'm learning on, it'll be another story.

This one took somewhat longer to do than the basic beadwork stuff but I like to think it came out well. It's available for a $15 donation to the Center for Constitutional Rights, the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights and Economic Justice, Common Cause, or the ACLU. Send me a screenshot of your donation or a receipt, and I'll cover first class shipping within the US.

This one took somewhat longer to do than the others, plus it involved a bunch of work with pliers beyond the common run, so it's available for a $15 donation to the Center for Constitutional Rights, the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights and Economic Justice, Common Cause, or the ACLU. Send me a screenshot of your donation or a receipt, and I'll cover first class shipping.

Working from home today. We don't have accumulation here beyond a driveway dusting visible from the kitchen window, but it's definitely snowing, so I don't feel bad about having only just logged on.

Hopefully the winds won't cause problems with the power lines. Or some of the local trees.

... I think I actually recognized the voice of the intern who answered the phone at my Congressional representative's office this morning. I'm pretty sure it was the same guy who answered when I called to let Rep. Clark know that I supported the anti-Bannon bill.
